Earth's habitability is not the result of a single lucky factor. It depends on the precise combination of position in the Goldilocks Zone, the chemistry of liquid water, and the stabilising influence of the Moon. Remove any one of these and the conditions for complex life collapse.

Define the Goldilocks Zone and explain why Earth sits within it while Venus and Mars do not.
Explain why liquid water is essential for all known life.
Describe two properties of water that actively help maintain Earth's habitability: its ability to dissolve substances and its high specific heat capacity.
Explain three ways the Moon stabilises Earth's conditions: by holding Earth's axial tilt steady, by slowing Earth's rotation, and by creating tides.
Apply these factors to fictional planets and reach a justified verdict on whether complex life could survive there.

Hook
If a learner guesses water straight away, don't confirm it. Say something like 'hold that thought, see if you can explain why water specifically matters', and let the pathway do the explaining.
Keep the reveal focused on what you don't know yet rather than what you do. The gap is doing the work here, not the facts you've already given them.
ITZA platform
On the Goldilocks Zone pathway, push for a specific reason Mars fails, not just 'too cold'. You want something like 'too small to hold onto an atmosphere', not just a temperature.
On the water cards, check learners can explain why ice floating matters, not just that it does. If ice sank, oceans would freeze from the bottom up, that's the version that actually sticks.
On the Moon pathway, ask what Earth would look like if the Moon had never formed. It's a good way to pull axial tilt, day length and tides into one answer instead of three separate facts.
If someone's gone quiet, 'which fact surprised you most' works on either pathway to get them talking again.
Classroom activity
Talk through the first planet as a whole class before pairs go off on their own. Showing that one fails every criterion together gives them the pattern to apply.
After that, pairs work through the rest in a few minutes each, reaching one of three verdicts: impossible, unlikely, or possible. Unlikely isn't a soft version of impossible, so don't let pairs blur the two.
Watch for pairs who jump to 'possible' the moment they spot water mentioned. That's the shortcut to interrupt, not just a wrong verdict, ask them to check the other two criteria before they lock in an answer.
One of the planets is built specifically to catch that shortcut: right distance, stable tilt, but its ice sinks instead of floats. Push with "if winter ice sinks to the bottom, can summer sun ever melt it?"
Leave a bit of extra time for whichever planet splits the room. That's usually where the best discussion happens.
Plenary
The reflective question asks learners to pick which loss would hurt life on Earth the most: water, the Moon, or the Goldilocks Zone position. There's no single right answer, what matters is whether the reasoning draws on evidence from the session rather than a guess.
Misconceptions to watch for

ACTUALLY
Liquid water is necessary but not sufficient. If ice sinks instead of floats, oceans freeze solid from the bottom up. The specific properties of water matter, not just its presence.
THEY'LL SAY
"The Moon is just a rock that reflects light."
ACTUALLY
The Moon shapes Earth's conditions for life in three profound ways: stabilising axial tilt, slowing rotation, and creating tides. It's an active partner in Earth's habitability, not a passive feature of the night sky.
THEY'LL SAY
"Earth is special because it has oxygen."
ACTUALLY
Oxygen in Earth's atmosphere is a consequence of life, not a precondition for it. The first living organisms on Earth didn't use oxygen at all. Liquid water and the right temperature come first.
THEY'LL ASK
"The Goldilocks Zone is a fixed region around the Sun."
ACTUALLY
The Goldilocks Zone is specific to each star and depends on its brightness. A dimmer star has a closer-in zone, a brighter star has one further out, which matters for the search for life around other stars.
